Itinerary



Day 1: Exploring Plovdiv

Your tour starts with a pick-up from your accommodation in Sofia or from Sofia Airport. It is also possible to join the tour from the town of  Plovdiv. After a transfer to  Plovdiv, you will be introduced to the cultural town of Plovdiv with a guided 2-hour walking tour of the city center and Old Plovdiv – the old 19th century part of town. Your Tour Leader will introduce you to the history of Plovdiv, and also point out the best places to drink wine and eat in the city. Your evening is free to explore Plovdiv further at your own pace, and discover the bars or restaurants on your own time.

Day 2: In the heart of the harvest

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer to the South Sakar Wine Region. Spend the day helping out with the grape harvest at a family-owned vineyard. While wine is a delicate, elegant and sophisticated product, the process of picking the grapes gives you a behind-the-scenes look into the reality of the sweaty, rigorous work that goes into the manual picking of the grapes – the raw material for the wine. The employees at the vineyard will take you out into the vineyard to cut grape branches and pack them into grape craters ready for transport to the winery. Back at the winery, you will witness first-hand the beginning stages of the wine making process from separating grapes to de-stemming the grapes, crushing them and transporting the liquid to fermentation tanks. An informal lunch will be enjoyed at the vineyard and, of course, there will be time to taste some wines. Transfer to a traditional guesthouse. Time to rest. In the evening, enjoy a home-cooked Bulgarian dinner at the guesthouse.

Day 3: Exploring South Sakar

Today is all about enjoyment. No more hard work. It’s all about tasting wines and getting to know the region and Bulgarian wine in general. We head back to the South Sakar Wine Region, and spend the day visiting two wineries.  Generally speaking, this region is hot. It is so hot in South Sakar that it is, in fact, one of the two hottest wine regions in Bulgaria. Big red wines is the result of the heat and terroir with the two most famous wines from this region being Syrah and Merlot. You will be warmly welcomed by the winery owners and winemakers. Most wineries in this region are still very much family enterprises, and at each visited winery, the passion is heartfelt and the efforts are evident. Each winery will present a selection of their wines for you to taste, and the owners/winemakers will be on-hand to explain the styles, techniques and backstories of the wines. Between the two winery visits, we enjoy a casual lunch. In the late afternoon, we return to the guesthouse for some time to relax. Tonight, we sit down and enjoy another delicious, home cooked meal prepare by our hosts at the traditional guesthouse.

Day 4: Going Organic

Today marks the penultimate day of the tour. After a hearty breakfast, we depart from the guesthouse and return to Plovdiv. On our way, we stop at an organic winery to learn more about organic wine making and how it differs from conventional wine making. Time for lunch before we arrive to the hotel in Plovdiv. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the last moments in Plovdiv.

Day 5: Departure

After breakfast and check-out, your Tour Leader will meet you in the lobby of your hotel to say goodbye before a driver transfers you to any address in Sofia or Sofia Airport.
