Enrich your Plovdiv vacation with a one day wine tour
Are there enough wineries in the Plovdiv region from which to choose from? The answer is definitely YES. Plovdiv is located in the middle of the broader Thracian Valley wine region at the dividing point between Western and Eastern Thrace. There are more than 20 boutique wineries in an 80-kilometer radius from Plovdiv. So, it is no problem to visit a few wineries around Plovdiv in one day and still be back in the evening. In addition, the Western Thrace wine region where Plovdiv is located is the birthplace of the local variety Mavrud which the sommeliers assess as the Bulgarian variety with the highest potential for international recognition.
Cultural Heritage Sites
There are plenty of opportunities to see cultural heritage sites on your wine tour. The Plovdiv area is the oldest inhabited area in Europe and there are multiple Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Bulgarian sites worth visiting. For example, Bachkovo monastery – the second largest monastery in Bulgaria, Asen’s fortress – the ancient fort that guarded the entrance to the Thracian Valley, the Red Church – one of the oldest Christian churches on the Balkans with unique wall paintings, Thracian tombs that could be found everywhere around Plovdiv. The list goes on and on.
