Stretching from the foot of the Sredna Gora mountain range to the sub-balkan region with the majestic peaks of the Balkan mountain range as a backdrop lies the famous Rose Valley region. The Rose Valley Wine & SPA Trail is inspired by the Thracian heritage found on these lands. Part of the Rose Valley stretches over an area called the Valley of the Kings because of the numerous tombs of Thracian kings discovered.  During the tour you will visit two of the most famous Thracian tombs – the Thracian tomb of Kazanluk and the Thracian tomb of Starosel. The base for the tour is the famous SPA resort town of Hisarya, where 22 hot water springs can be found. Read more about Hisarya on our blog post. Apart from indulging in the SPA services and recreational options offered at your hotel, Hisarya is a great place to discover on foot, on a bike or even on a horse from one of the nearby horseriding centres. The tour includes a day trip to the gorgeous Plovdiv – Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, where we will also taste wine at the local winery – the Dragomir Winery Estate. Following the Thracians’ footsteps, we will visit the town of Panagyurishte where the most exquisite Thracian golden treasure resides. Here the Rumelia Winery opens its doors to welcome you and introduce you to its award-winning wines among which its wine from the local variety Mavrud has gained considerable recognition. The tour ends at Starosel Wine & SPA Complex and the enchanting Chateau Copsa reminiscent of the Medieval fortress that once existed not too far from today’s boutique winery.

During the Rose Valley Wine & SPA Trail we will visit the following wineries:

Dragomir

It is rare to find a wine estate in a big city, but Dragomir will surprise you in many ways. The winery is located in the southern part of the ancient city of Plovdiv – Bulgaria’s second largest city. Dragomir is more than a wine estate, it is a manifestation of the love for wine, but also for each other of the oenologists Nataliya and Konstantin. The winery is built in 2006 and not long after it received prestigious international recognition at Vinalies Internationales in Paris in 2010 and 2011. A unique feature of Dragomir is the digestive made from the local variety Mavrud. Dragomir offers elegance and class inside the borders of the city and it is a must see for any wine enthusiast who visits Plovdiv.

Rumelia

Apart from being famous for their wine, the Thracians were also skillful jewelry makers. The most exquisite Thracian gold treasure consisting of nine vessels for drinking wine, was discovered in the Merul area nearby the present town of Panagyurishte. Thus, naturally Merul became one of the brands for Panagyurishte’s newest winery – Rumelia. Established in 2006, Rumelia has gained significant international recognition for its wines and has played a major part in promoting the local variety Mavrud. Rumelia is meticulous about the quality of the wine and offers a wine experience inherited from the Thracians themselves.

Midalidare Estate

Midalidare Estate is one of the fastest developing wine estates in Bulgaria. The wines of Midalidare quickly gained recognition in the country and abroad, consistently winning numerous medals in prestigious competitions. Midalidare Estate is set to transform the Mogilovo area where it is located into a rural oasis, while using the resources at hand. Thus, the former school building in the village of Mogilovo now houses a charming hotel and SPA and the old buildings of the agricultural cooperative were turned into a modern wine estate that features its own museum and a wild animal sanctuary nearby. At Midalidare Estate one could indulge in a number of activities or simply enjoy the rustic peacefulness of the area, where only one thing is a must – the wine.

Starosel

The wine producing tradition in Bulgaria begins with the Thracians – numerous tribes who inhabited the area in ancient times. Just a few kilometers from Starosel winery, one finds the biggest Thracian temple ever discovered, as well as one of the oldest wineries from those times. In unison with the cultural heritage of the area, Starosel winery produces high-quality wines and emphasizes the connection with the Thracians who used wine in their most important rituals. In addition, Starosel Wine & SPA Compex features a hotel with relaxation facilities, natural mineral water pool and a restaurant that specializes in traditional meals from the region.

Chateau Copsa

Chateau Copsa is situated in the foothills of the Balkan mountain (Stara Planina) nearby the town of Sopot. According to historians, just outside of today’s city of Sopot, there was once a Medieval town called Copsis, hence the name of the winery. The architecture of Chateau Copsa resembles a Medieval castle and is inspired by the preserved ruins of Copsis. The winery has also embraced the traditions of the area to use and experiment with the local variety Karlovski misket that only grows in this region. Tasting intriguing wines, dining at the modern gourmet restaurant and relaxing at the outdoor area make Chateau Copsa an ideal place for a peaceful time away from the city.
